Interrailing in Slovenia: The Top 5 Places to Interrail in Slovenia

Thinking of interrailing in Slovenia? Situated in Central Europe, Slovenia is an extraordinary country to travel through. A popular tourist destination, it’s known for its lakes, ski resorts and breathtaking mountains. But that’s not all that Slovenia has to offer.

With over 10,000 caves, the world’s largest ski jump and one vineyard for every 75 people – it’s easy to see why over 6 million tourists visit each year. If Slovenia is on your bucketlist, you might already know about the picturesque destination of Lake Bled. But if you’re stuck for other places to visit, this guide may prove to be invaluable.

During your interrailing trip around Slovenia, make sure that you stop at Piran. A resort city that’s located on the awe-inspiring Adriatic coastline, this historic city is mesmerising. When there, venture over to the pedestrian-only Old Town. Reminiscent of Venice, it’s abundant with traditional eateries, wine bars, winding alleyways and Gothic architecture.

If you love history and want to discover more about this quaint little town, be sure to explore the oldest building in the city – the Venetian House and the characterful main square known as Tartinijev trg.

Maribor

Second on the list is the charming and provincial Maribor. Slovenia’s second-largest city, it’s beloved for its medieval Old Town, colourful buildings and rich wine culture (see the Old Vine – more than 400 years old, it’s the world’s oldest vine!). When there, spend time wandering the tranquil streets, soaking in the culture at the Maribor Castle or taking a lazy boat trip on the River Drava.

A city that’s frequented many top 10 lists for years, Maribor has several districts to explore, including the waterfront Lent District. Ideal for those looking for trendy restaurants, bars and clubs, you can discover a lively nightlife within the Mesarski Prehod. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a more relaxed meal, then you can have a scrumptious burger at Jack & Joe or a craft beer at Rokaj – a rocker bar set on the riverside.

Postojna

Nestled in the traditional region of Inner Carniola and 40 minutes from Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, is the extraordinary town of Postojna. Most prominently in the town is the mysterious Postojna Cave. Filled with frothing rocks, stalagmites and natural limestone, it’s definitely worth a visit and is the perfect photo opportunity.

Alternatively, you can head over to Predjama Castle (as pictured above) or venture to Rakov Skocjan – a regional nature park that’s known for its unusual rock formations and abundance of wildlife, which is only a few short kilometres away.

Ljubljana

We couldn’t have written a top 5 list of Slovenia without mentioning its magical capital, Ljubljana. Perfectly blending historic charm with a modern twist, the capital is a wonderful stop off when interrailing around the country. With dozens of delicious restaurants, attractions and sights to sink your teeth into, you won’t have a dull moment.

Four attractions that are definitely worth a visit are Prešernov trg Square, Ljubljana Zoo, Zmajski most (Dragon Bridge) and Ljubljana Castle. The latter stands tall above the city and dates back 900 years. As well as granting beautiful views out over the city, two museum exhibitions, restaurants, a cafe and a nightclub (believe it or not!) lie within its walls.

Ptuj

Just under 1 hour from Maribor and less than 4 hours from Ljubljana lies Ptuj (pronounced p-too-ee). Although this is one of the smallest and oldest towns in Slovenia, its beautiful sunsets, eye-catching red-tile roofs, ornate monasteries and cobblestone alleys are a must for anyone wanting to discover the real Slovenia whilst interrailing.

Spend your time in this sleepy town enjoying the laid-back ambience, friendly bars and restaurants and grand whitewashed Vurberk Castle. If you’re here for longer than one or two days, you could also head out on a day trip to one of the wineries nearby.
