Interrail Pass FAQs

Which countries can I use my Interrail pass in?

If you choose the Global Pass, you can travel in all 33 participating countries. These countries are Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey.

Who can buy an Interrail pass?

The Interrail Pass is available for purchase by European citizens (yes, that includes the UK). Non-European citizens can get a Eurail Pass for the same price as an Interrail pass.

If you are not a European citizen but live in Europe, you are also eligible to purchase and use an Interrail pass. During the ordering process, you will be requested information about your country of residence, which will be reflected on your pass. Consequently, it is necessary to carry an official European residency card or document matching the indicated country of residence when traveling with your Interrail pass.

Can I travel in my own country?

With the Interrail Global Pass, you are entitled to travel in your country of residence with one outbound and one inbound journey, as long as your country of residence is one of the countries covered by the Global Pass and you travel with one of the participating railway companies.

The outbound journey is for leaving your country of residence and the inbound journey is for returning. To use the inbound or outbound journeys, you need to need to make the journey as part of one of your pass’s travel days. You may still need to buy a seat reservation for your journey as well, depending on the railway company. If you travel into your country of residence and back out in the same travel day, that uses both the inbound and outbound journey.

You can use the inbound or outbound journeys at any point during your trip. You do not have to use them in any particular order – the inbound can can come before the outbound and vice versa. You can also use neither of them or only one of them if you like.

Once you’ve used up your inbound and outbound journey, you cannot use your Global Pass to travel in or through your country of residence at any other point during your trip. However, you can always buy separate tickets if needed.

You cannot travel within your own country using a One Country Pass. If you are using the Benelux One-Country Pass, and are a citizen of Belgium, Luxembourg or the Netherlands then you are only able to use the pass in the two countries you are not a citizen of.

How long is a travel day?

A travel day lasts 24 hours from 00:00 CET until 23:59 CET, and you can travel on as many trains as you want within that time frame – it still counts as using one travel day. If you are using a night train that departs in the evening and arrives directly the next day then only one travel day is used – your day of departure.

How many days are there in the one month validity period?

If an Interrail pass is valid for a month, it means that it is valid for the number of days that are in the month that it starts. For example, if the pass start date is in July, the pass will be valid for 31 days, but if the pass start date is in June, the pass will only be valid for 30 days. If you depart on 12th August, your pass will be valid until 11th September. This is all taken into account by our Interrail planning tool’s pass tracking feature.

Can I get on any train with just my Interrail pass?

You can board most local and regional trains with your Interrail pass without any issues. However, for high-speed, international, and night trains, it’s necessary to make seat reservations. Keep in mind that popular trains tend to fill up quickly, so it’s advisable to make your reservations well in advance.

What is a mobile pass?

The Interrail mobile pass is a paperless ticket that can be added instantly to your smartphone. It runs on Interrail’s own app so you can get train timetables and digitally add journeys and keep track of the number of travel days you’ve used up.

It has the added flexibility of not having to choose a start date until you actually want to use it. You can buy it up to 11 months before you want to travel.

And, if you lose your phone while travelling, Interrail will replace your pass for free.

Can I still get a paper Interrail pass?

Of course, if you prefer have the traditional paper pass you can still order it.

When does my Interrail pass start?

With mobile passes, you activate your pass when you make your first journey. The pass must be activated within 11 months of the purchase date.

When purchasing a paper pass, you must provide the start date at checkout. This is then printed on your pass and the validity date therefore starts from them, regardless of when your first journey is. Paper passes can also be purchased up to 11 months in advance of travelling.

Is public transport included on my Interrail pass?

No, public transport is generally not included on your pass.
