Croatia is an interrailing hotspot and is becoming a more popular destination in general for people travelling in Europe. Split is Croatia’s second largest city, sitting on the Dalmatian Coast. It’s a buzzing place with great vibes and a true riviera feel, but also steeped in history with the enormous Diocletian’s Palace forming Split’s old town.
It’s a great place to start or finish an interrail, as there are direct flights from Split to many places around Europe. It’s also a nice option to sandwich between some big city stops, as it offers good beaches and a beautiful coastline, ideal for relaxation.
However, if you want a bit more fun we recommend going out on a day trip – there are a huge number available, particularly out on water. Here are our top 4 day trips from Split for interrailers.
Catamaran excursion to Hvar, Pakleni Islands and Brac
We (the Interrail Planner co-founders) went on this trip last summer and it was fantastic. Operated by Summer Blues, the boat sets off at 9am and returns after a 10-hour excursion. There are several swim stops around about the Pakleni Islands and Brac, and there’s a stop with a tour of Hvar. It’s excellent value for a full-day Catamaran ride, there is plenty of food and there’s unlimited beer and wine, all included!

Krka National Park
This is a hugely popular place to check out in a day. Krka National Park covers an area of 142 square kilometres. The park is famous for waterfalls and, specifically, the Skradinski Buk falls. The falls are one of Croatia’s most famous sights and are located only 90 minutes away from Split by bus. When you’re in Split, you’ll notice loads of outlets offering these tours, but often pre-booking online can be cheaper and you’ll be able to see reviews first, too.

Dubrovnik
If you aren’t already planning going interrailing to Dubrovnik, you can just about do it in a day from Split. The train network in Croatia only runs as far south as Split, so you won’t be able to use your Interrail pass to get from Split to Dubrovnik. However, buses are fairly cheap and take around 3-4 hours, and there’s always the option of a scenic ferry journey, as well!
So, if you get up early one morning you would be able to squeeze in a day of sightseeing in Dubrovnik and explore its Old Town, walk around (on top) the city walls, and maybe even go on a Game of Thrones tour! Be warned though, Dubrovnik gets extremely busy during the summer months.
Trogir
Trogir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and only a 30-minute bus ride from Split. Alternatively, you could get an Uber boat (yes, they exist!) or book a speedboat excursion that stops off at the Blue Lagoon, which is amazing for snorkelling, and Trogir.

Trogir is a beautiful, romantic town set within medieval walls and linked by bridges to the mainland and the larger Čiovo Island. There’s a beautiful promenade by the harbour, which is the perfect spot to grab a drink on a warm summer’s evening. There are also plenty of Game of Thrones filming locations to discover; the town appears as the trading harbour of Qarth in the TV series.
