Prepaid Travel Cards

WeSwap

When you top up your WeSwap card, your money is exchanged with fellow travellers. The rate is the perfect interbank rate (used by banks to exchange currency with each other) plus a fee. The more urgently you need the exchange to take place, the higher this fee. This is usually 1.4% for an instant exchange, but drops to 1% if you can wait 7 days.

Key facts and fees

  • Application fee: free
  • ATM fee: €1.75 for cash withdrawals under €250, free for cash withdrawals over €250
  • Top-up fee: free
  • Monthly fee: free
  • Delivery time: 7-10 working days
  • Card replacement fee: €5

Other useful information

  • Be aware that you have to top up separately for each currency you wish to use and that WeSwap doesn’t support every currency in Europe, so make sure to double check if you’re going to a country that doesn’t use the Euro. (You can always take that country’s spending money in cash if it’s not covered.)
  • The card is managed with an app, available on both iPhone and Android.

Fair FX

FairFX has its own exchange rate that changes daily but is generally better than other prepaid cards.

Key facts and fees

  • Application fee: free through Interrail Planner
  • ATM fee: €1.50 fee per cash withdrawal, so try to minimise cash withdrawals and use card payments where possible
  • Top-up fee: free by debit card/bank transfer
  • Monthly fee: free
  • Delivery time: 7-10 working days
  • Card replacement fee: €9

Other useful information

  • You must load the card with at least €60 to begin with.
  • If you get the Euro card, there is a 1.4% fee for transactions in currencies that aren’t Euros. However, if you have any leftover cash when you return to the UK (assuming that’s where you’re from), you can spend it without a fee. The cash withdrawal fee does still apply, though.
  • The card usually has a £9.95 application fee, but if you apply by clicking through our links, it is free.
