Here is what UK travellers should know before setting off.<\/p>\n<h2>Can UK travellers still use an Interrail Pass?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes. It can be used on Eurostar and on thousands of trains throughout Europe, although reservations are required for certain services.<\/p>\n<p>If the UK is your country of residence, a Global Pass generally includes one outbound journey and one inbound journey within the UK. These journeys allow you to travel from your starting point to the border, airport or port and return home at the end of your trip.<\/p>\n<p>Each journey must take place on a valid travel day. You can use multiple trains during that day if they form part of your outbound or inbound journey.<\/p>\n<h2>Do British travellers need a visa for Europe?<\/h2>\n<p>British citizens can normally visit countries in the Schengen area without a visa for tourism, provided the total visit does not exceed <strong>90 days in any rolling 180-day period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This allowance applies across the Schengen area as a whole\u2014not separately to each country. For example, time spent in France, Germany, Italy and Spain during the same trip all contributes towards the same 90-day limit.<\/p>\n<p>Different rules may apply if you intend to:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Stay for longer than 90 days<\/li>\n<li>Work or study abroad<\/li>\n<li>Travel using a passport issued by another country<\/li>\n<li>Visit a European country outside the Schengen area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/foreign-travel-advice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entry requirements for every country on your route<\/a> before travelling. Rules can vary, particularly when your itinerary includes both Schengen and non-Schengen countries.<\/p>\n<h2>Check your passport before travelling<\/h2>\n<p>British citizens must carry a valid passport when travelling to most European countries.<\/p>\n<p>For entry into the Schengen area, your passport generally needs to:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Have been issued less than 10 years before the date you arrive<\/li>\n<li>Remain valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do not rely solely on the expiry date printed in your passport. Some older British passports had additional months added when they were renewed, and those extra months may not count towards the ten-year issue-date requirement.<\/p>\n<p>Check your passport well before departure and consult the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/travel-to-eu-schengen-area\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK government guidance for European travel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the Entry\/Exit System?<\/h2>\n<p>The EU\u2019s Entry\/Exit System, usually shortened to EES, digitally records short visits made by non-EU travellers entering participating European countries.<\/p>\n<p>British passport holders may need to register their passport details, facial image and fingerprints when crossing an external Schengen border. Once registered, later checks should usually involve scanning your passport and confirming your identity.<\/p>\n<p>You do not need to apply for EES permission before travelling. Registration takes place at the border.<\/p>\n<p>Allow extra time when passing through border controls, especially when travelling on Eurostar or using busy ferry terminals and airports. Always follow the arrival-time guidance provided by your operator.<\/p>\n<h2>Will British travellers need ETIAS?<\/h2>\n<p>The European Travel Information and Authorisation System, known as ETIAS, is expected to introduce an online travel-authorisation requirement for visa-exempt visitors from countries including the UK.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing, ETIAS is expected to begin operating during the final quarter of 2026. It is not the same as a visa, but eligible travellers will need to apply online before visiting participating European countries once the system becomes operational.<\/p>\n<p>The timetable has changed previously, so check the official <a href=\"https:\/\/travel-europe.europa.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU travel website<\/a> before your trip rather than relying on older articles or social-media posts.<\/p>\n<h2>Will Brexit affect Eurostar travel?<\/h2>\n<p>You can still use an Interrail Global Pass on Eurostar, but a paid seat reservation is compulsory.<\/p>\n<p>Eurostar has a limited allocation of seats for passholders, and popular departures can sell out even when ordinary tickets remain available. Book your reservation as early as possible, particularly during weekends, school holidays and the summer.<\/p>\n<p>You will also pass through passport control and security before boarding. Some plans continue to include European roaming, while others charge a daily fee or require a separate roaming package.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Check which destinations your plan covers<\/li>\n<li>Confirm your data allowance and fair-use limit<\/li>\n<li>Find out whether daily roaming charges apply<\/li>\n<li>Download important tickets, reservations and maps for offline use<\/li>\n<li>Consider purchasing a regional eSIM if your existing plan is expensive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember that countries commonly included in an Interrail route may fall into different roaming zones.<\/p>\n<h2>Do you need travel insurance?<\/h2>\n<p>You should arrange suitable travel insurance as soon as you book your trip.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible UK residents can apply for a free Global Health Insurance Card. A valid GHIC\u2014or an eligible existing EHIC\u2014can provide access to medically necessary state healthcare in certain countries on similar terms to local residents.<\/p>\n<p>However, these cards are not replacements for travel insurance. They do not normally cover private treatment, repatriation, cancellations, lost possessions or every activity you might undertake.<\/p>\n<p>Choose a policy covering all the countries on your route, your full travel period and any activities you have planned.<\/p>\n<h2>Have Interrail seat reservations changed?<\/h2>\n<p>Brexit itself has not fundamentally changed how Interrail reservations work.<\/p>\n<p>Many regional trains remain reservation-free, allowing you to board with your active pass. However, most high-speed trains, international services and night trains require a separate paid reservation.<\/p>\n<p>Reservation requirements vary between countries and operators.
